Temple of Philae

This temple is the largest and also the most important temple on Philae. It is dedicated to the Goddess Isis, who is symbolic of love and beauty. She was revered and worshiped during the Greco-Roman time until about 550 CE. However, the early Christians defaced a lot of the ancient carvings and also wrote on some of the carvings and made the temple into a church.

The temple design is that of the ancient Egyptian temples with an open court and pylon. At the entrance you can find high pylons with huge reliefs of Ptolemaios XII (father of Cleopatra), fighting his enemies while on the inside the walls are decorated with scenes from the life of the Goddess and her family.
