A strikingly graceful monument built by the New Kingdom pharaohs Amenhotep III and Ramses II , the Luxor temple is the main attraction in Luxor. It lies in the heart of the modern town and is an ode to the changing face of the country over centuries. It was made in the honor and memory of Mut, the consort of Amenhotep III and the son he moon god Khons.

This temple has beautiful with deities resting in them with their vestibules and subsidiary chambers. It also has an open Peristyle Court and a large Hypostyle Hall. The temple has seen a lot of changes over time including some done by Amenophis IV, Tutankhamun – he embellished the walls of the colonnade but ruined the temple of the Aten. Ramses II did a lot of work in the temple and expanded it with the addition of a new colonnaded court towards the north end.

The temple was transformed into a church during the Christian era and into a mosque during the Islamic period.
