This huge lighthouse was once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, also called the Pharos of Alexandria. Ptolemaic Kingdom built the lighthouse during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in about 280 BC.
It is said to be over 350 feet high. There are two in-depth descriptions of the lighthouse in the10 th century by Idrisi and Yusuf Ibn al-Shaikh, Moorish travelers. They say that the structure was about 300 cubits high. Its design was different from the regular lighthouses but more like a modern skyscraper.
This monumental structure stood the test of time for about 1500 years and thereafter, it is presumed to have become the victim of earthquakes
