Located at a commanding position, is a major tourist attraction. It was built in 1176 by Saladin. Though the original structure disappeared long ago except for the eastern outer walls and each ruler has made his additions to the Citadel.
It is the most popular non-pharaonic monument in Cairo and has the most amazing medieval Islamic fortification as well as architecture. It’s large imposing gateways, walls and towers have dominated the city’s skyline for many centuries. It is one of the first monuments to be seen as you are entering Cairo from any part of the city.
It is renowned for its beautiful scenery, grand view of the city, a well-preserved history, numerous mosques, and museums. Some of the must-see places within this area are, El-Gawhara Palace museum, the National Military Museum, Carriage Museum, and the Police Museum.
